I don’t currently own a watch but I’ve recently started looking around for one. Below are some I like, does Oppo have other suggestions or brands I should check out? (keep in mind I’m a none-too-rich grad student)

I’m a minimalist, less is more.

I wear watches but I don’t really WATCH. I had one Seiko for the better part of 25 years. In fact I’d probably still be wearing it if my wife hadn’t bought me a Citizen Eco for Christmas last year.

Shinola is kinda king of the “artisan made in Detroit” movement. I’ve heard good stuff about them, but they’re a bit pricey (because ‘Murican made).

Shinola’s look alright, but are way to much for a quartz movement. You could get virtually the same watch with a $30 Timex Camper and a replacement leather band.

As for minimalist watches, I recommend the ones Braun released.

Right now I’m looking for a Timex Weekender Chrono as a beater, and a diver replica like something from Squale. EBay has a lot of great quality vintage hand-wound watches for around $100, and autos for maybe $200, but they may require an expensive tune up.

I love Shinola watches visually speaking, however they are a bit overpriced for what they are.

Also, Skagen fits you wants perfectly at a fairly low price. http://www.skagen.com/us/en/men/prod…

I’ve been wearing a Squale as my daily watch for the last 3 years and beaten the hell out of it. Nicely made and still a fantastic looking watch for the price, IMO. I have a bunch of others, but I just can’t stop wearing that one.

I’ve been wanting a Steinhart for awhile, but their production runs seem to sell out fast.

I’ve been looking at Steinharts too, but I’ve got these skinny wrists so I don’t like to wear anything larger than 40mm. Squale seems like they make the smallest diver. I might get a Fleiger German pilot replica since they make 36mm version, if I can find one for a good price.

I’m new to Oppo and barely know anything about cars, but I’m a lifelong watch collector, so thanks for making a thread that I can intelligently respond to!

The first question that I ask a watch newbie is whether they want a quartz watch or a mechanical watch. Quartz is great for simplicity, but a mechanical watch is an incredible piece of precision engineering that hasn’t fundamentally changed in hundreds of years and can last almost forever with care.

If you want a quartz watch, all watches in the same price range are of very similar quality. There are only so many factories in China making watches that cost a few hundred dollars so there’s overlap. I don’t think any brands in that price range (besides Seiko and a couple others) actually own their manufacturing facilities.

Here are a few things I’d check out without knowing more about what you’re looking for:

-Autodromo makes very nice watches their designs punch well above their weight. The owner/designer is a huge car nut and a nice guy.

-Any Seiko 5 series automatic watch is a tremendous value for the money, and a great introduction into mechanical watches. Their dive watches, like the SKX007, are legendary bargains for the quality they offer.

-Worn&Wound is a great website that focuses on affordable watches. The site’s founders are very genuine guys and passionate about affordable watches. Check out their buying guides: http://wornandwound.com/articles/

Hope that’s helpful!

I’ve wanted a Shinola for a while, but I can’t get past the $750 price tag for the one I want.

Michael Kors actually makes a decent looking watch for around the $200 range. It’s no special time keeper, but the case and band are high quality.

I wore a $50-something Seiko 5 off Amazon for about two years before I cracked one of the non-replaceable watchband links. It told the time and had day/date, which is all I could ever need from a watch. Not sure if they still make the model I have, but I’d vouch for the other models in the family.

Currently sporting one of these Casios. Frankly, it’s one of the better watches I’ve had. Professional enough to wear in the workplace and strong enough that I can not really care if I break it. Plus it’s like 10 bucks.

Among some other stuff, I also have a Steinhart, which is super minimalist and cool. No idea what it costs, and I don’t want to look because it was given to me by a friend’s dad while he was on his deathbed, and I don’t want to cheapen the gesture by looking up the price, but it’s an amazing piece, and you should check them out.
